Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Wasn't the strap fastened, or was there a defect in the strap?
Or did the cycle move foward or back to cause slack in the strap?

If it makes you feel any better, listen to my story of a cable breaking. I was towing a cycle on its rear wheel (had the front wheel in a holding rig on my car). It worked the the cycle fork, to allow turns. The holding rig did not support the cycle vertical by itself, so I installed two "guy" cables. This all worked fine until I crossed an abrupt change in angle of the road (coming out of a parking lot). The cycle folded to the car as a pocket knife folding. The pivot points of the cables were such that the cables tightened like the toggle of a vise-grips and both cables snapped. You finish the rest of the story!!
